West Chester child care tips: the importance of reading for brain development

Posted on 06-23-2014

It has long been recognized that reading to and with your child plays an important role in developing essential life skills. Here is a brief guide regarding the benefits your child will receive from this activity as well as some helpful advice for encouraging your child to explore the world of literature.

Reading benefits for preverbal children

Pre-verbal children benefit from story time for the same reason they benefit from baby talk. These are the most effective ways for them to develop language skills, vocabulary, communication skills and an understanding of the relationship between sounds and meanings. In addition, infants also receive visual and tactile stimulation through interactive storybooks, boosting other areas of the brain.

Reading benefits for toddlers and preschool children

Having been exposed to the reading process as an infant, your toddler or preschooler will already have a foundation on which to build essential language and cognitive skills. Your child will start to recognize the relationship between words on the page, spoken words and naming the objects around him, building the foundation needed for developing writing skills. He or she will also develop positive associations with books and will be more likely to continue discovering more challenging materials. These skills are essential to future academic success.

How to encourage reading

  • Start early: Your child is never too young to start building a relationship with books. Age-appropriate storybooks offer a wonderful bonding experience for you and your child. Encourage your child to touch the pages, point out colors, shapes, and characters, and participate in the story.
  • Appeal to his or her interests: As your child gets older, read books together that appeal to your child’s interests and reward them once you finish the book. For example, if your child loves animals, choose a book about animals and encourage him or her to talk to you about the different animals that you are reading about. Once the book is finished, you may want to plan a weekend trip to The Cincinnati Zoo, where your child can see many of these animals in person.

One of the most important ways to encourage reading skills and help your child to develop a lifelong love of learning is to choose a child care facility that shares your priorities.
